What does it mean? It can be the traditional understanding of making sound effects work with pictures from simply adding footsteps that weren’t recorded on set, to complex layers of sound built up from organic sources, synthetic origin or just from imagination, to work with a picture in extraordinary ways. This can be quite musical at times and incorporate composition skills as well as production techniques.
I’ve been involved with sound design ever since I started exploring synthesisers, but only really got involved with the application of sound imagination when I started working in Film and TV. Examples include :making a sound track based on actual noises recorded from washing a car.to building up synthetic layers of sound representing Aliens crawling through a space ship to battle.
Sound design can also be just enhancing what is already in front of you. Finding, recording, creating the right ambience or setting. Sound Design is designing the imagination of sound, and that can be a multi facetted process.
